A federal judge in Seattle on Jan 23, 2025 issued a temporarily temporary restraining order against the executive order signed by President Donald Trump that significantly limited eligibility for birthright citizenship. "I have been on the bench for over four decades," said Judge Coughenour. "I can't remember another case where the question presented is as clear as it is here. Anti-Indian Hate on the Rise in the U.S. Over H1B Visa Program ( Source: TimesXP ) The H1B visa program has long been a topic of debate in the U.S. due to its high demand and limited availability. However, for the first time, Indians on H1B visas are facing an unprecedented wave of hate and discrimination, surpassing even that experienced by undocumented immigrants. Although H1B visa holders come from various countries, Indians dominate the program, making up approximately 75% of all H1B holders. They are an integral part of Silicon Valley and the broader tech industry. This trend is alarming, considering that Indian H1B professionals are known for their hard work, significant tax contributions, and law-abiding nature, with minimal to no involvement in crimes or illegal activities. Is Legal Immigration to the U.S. Under Threat? Most of these professionals hold four-year degrees and possess relevant experience. It’s difficult to understand the basis for such hate. These individuals neither seek love nor hostility; they simply wish to be paid the prevailing wage (or better) and work in an environment with a positive office culture. In return, they make meaningful contributions to America’s economy and society. Calls for Eliminating the H1B Program Should Not Be Entertained The H1B visa program is a cornerstone of the U.S. economy, particularly in the tech sector, where talent shortages are acute. Removing this program would not only harm countless hardworking professionals but also disrupt industries that rely on global expertise. Instead of eliminating H1B, efforts should focus on improving the program to ensure fair treatment and equitable opportunities for all.
