India has officially rolled out chip-enabled e-passports in 13 cities, introducing a new era of high-tech, secure, and globally recognized travel documents. Part of the Passport Seva 2.0 initiative, these biometric passports will be available nationwide by mid-2025.
Cities like Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Bhubaneswar, and Shimla are among the early adopters, while Chennai has already issued over 20,000 e-passports since March 2025. The e-passports are being printed at the India Security Press in Nashik, under the Make in India initiative.
Importantly, the application process remains unchanged — citizens can continue to apply through the Passport Seva Portal and submit biometrics at designated centers.
With this leap, India is not only bolstering travel security but also modernizing its identity infrastructure to meet global standards.
Pros
Enhanced Security: Harder to forge or misuse due to biometric encryption.
Faster Immigration: Supports automated e-gates and quicker border checks.
Global Compatibility: Recognized by ICAO-compliant countries.
Make in India Push: Printed locally at the India Security Press, Nashik.
Cons
Costly Replacements: Damaged chips require full passport replacement.
Tech Dependence: Malfunctions may cause delays.
Privacy Concerns: Despite encryption, biometric data storage may raise red flags for some.

Countries Already Using E-Passports
Over 120 countries have adopted e-passports. Some notable ones include:
United States
United Kingdom
Australia
Singapore
Japan
These countries follow ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards for biometric passports, enabling smoother cross-border travel and global interoperability.
Equipped with an embedded RFID chip, the e-passport securely stores encrypted biometric and personal data - such as your photo, fingerprints, and passport number - protected by international protocols like Basic Access Control (BAC) and Extended Access Control (EAC).
India’s new e-passport is more than just a travel document — it's a smart, secure, and globally accepted ID for the modern traveller.
