DOS Launches $750 Expedited B-1/B-2 Visa Interview Fee: Pilot Program Begins July 1, 2026

The U.S. Department of State (DOS) published a temporary final rule on June 9, 2026 (91 FR 34768), introducing an optional $750 premium fee to expedite interview scheduling for B-1/B-2 (business and tourism) visa applicants.


We are hopeful that we should have an update on this anytime now.


Key Timeline & Details


  • Effective Dates: A 6-month pilot program running July 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026.

  • The Benefit: Eligible applicants can secure a consular interview within 10 business days, subject to appointment slots and DOS resources at the selected post.

  • Cost: $750 USD, in addition to the standard $185 MRV application fee.


How It Works


  1. Complete Form DS-160 and pay the standard $185 fee.

  2. Schedule a regular (non-expedited) interview date first.

  3. If the post is participating and has capacity, an online option appears to upgrade to an expedited slot within 10 business days for $750.


Critical Limitations & Guardrails


  • No Guarantee of Approval — the fee only accelerates the appointment date; it does not influence the officer's decision or bypass eligibility/screening requirements.

  • Adjudication Is Not Fast-Tracked — administrative processing and security clearances still take the standard amount of time.

  • Limited Availability — only select embassies/consulates will participate (listed on travel.state.gov), with slots strictly capped to avoid disrupting regular wait times.

  • Non-Refundable — missing the expedited appointment or failing to complete payment forfeits both the slot and the fee.


Why Now


The pilot is meant to relieve interview backlogs exceeding 12 months at several posts and to absorb surging travel demand ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Existing no-fee expedite options for humanitarian, emergency, or government-referred travel remain unchanged at all posts. DOS will evaluate pilot data at year-end to decide whether to make the fee permanent, adjust it, or discontinue it.


Reminder: Public comments on this temporary final rule are being accepted by DOS through July 9, 2026.
